We are a wee family of four who moved from the East to the West Coast of the Scottish Highlands during lockdown. This place, a regular holiday destination for us throughout the years, has always had a strong, mystical hold over us.
About us
Two and a half years into our move, with our kids now settled into the Nursery and School, and having been welcomed into the wonderful community of Strontian with open arms, we would now like to set up a business here. Having both been self-employed for about twenty years, where our work has taken us here, there and everywhere, we would now like to create a wonderful business in our new home, which will honour our surroundings and will benefit this glorious community.
About Strontian
Strontian in a nutshell: Strontian, Sron A T-Sithein in Gaelic, translates as Nose Of The Fairy Hill. Strontian lends its name to the only Gaelic element on the Periodic Table. ‘SR 38’ represents strontium which was extracted from the mineral Strontianite which was discovered in 1790 right here in our surrounding hills. Strontian sits alongside the wonderful Loch Sunart which hosts otters, and so much more... And Strontian is also nestled within the gentle, luscious grasp of the Ariundle National Nature Reserve which acts to protect our Atlantic Oakwood Rainforest. A rainforest? In Scotland? Surely not? The Ariundle National Nature Reserve is classed as a temperate rainforest, rather than a tropical one, and as such, it's extremely rare. The conditions required for this to thrive are high annual rainfall, very little variation in temperature and clean air; conditions which occur in less than 1 per cent of the planet’s surface. What a place to live! So, folklore plus phenomenal geology plus Scottish tidal loch plus ancient rainforest, clearly equals…… GIN?? The idea for The Strontian Distillery was born. We would love for you to join us on this journey - please watch this space!
